CooperSmith’s - Round One: http://aspenlake.blogspot.com/2007/12/round-one-coopersmiths.html

Growing up, Kadia saw how hard her brother and sister-in-law worked. They had almost no time for anything else. That‘s why she decided she wasn’t going to become part of the ‘corporate machine’. She was going to live self sufficiently and never have to work at a real job. She spent most of her spare time while in college learning how to paint and had already sold a masterpiece. When she moved back to Aspen Lake rented a small property in the hills District and immediately got started learning how to fish and garden

Soon though, she realized that her roof leaked. It was okay, until an early winter came and she woke up with her bed covered in snow…

Still, she was determined to keep her way of life. She would just have to find a way to work around it.

Well gardening one cold afternoon, her old friend Sunny stopped by. They had grown up together and gone to college together.
“Sunny!”
“Hey there Kadia. I heard you were in town.”
They greeted each other with a hug and sat down to catch up. Kadia found out that Sunny was in politics, and so was George. When Sunny mentioned George Kadia went quiet.
“Still have a thing for him?” Sunny asked.
Kadia shrugged, “I’m not sure… I haven’t seen him since I left college…”
“He’s back in Aspen Lake you know."
“Yeah?”
“Why not give him a call?”
“Would he still want to talk to me? I mean, I ditched him…”
“And he never got over you. But from what I’m seeing, you never got over him either. So go for it girl.”
Kadia mulled it over for the next few days and finally summoned up the courage to give George a phone call.

George sounded just like the George she had dated through College. Talking to him brought back so many memories. She had really missed him she realized, and invited him over. He arrived a short time later. She went out to greet him and he immediately dropped to his knees.
“Marry me Kaida.”
“Wha…”
“Kadia,I love you and I always shave loved you. Marry me.”
“I - I - I have to think about it!”

Photobucket

The next few weeks that was all she did think about. Marry George. Could they make a happy life together? He had a career, was part of the ‘corporate machine’ she was desperate to be no part of. But he was always so good to her, and all he wanted was to have a big family. She didn’t know which decision to make so finally called up her brother Alex to ask his opinion. He was distracted, as usual, but was a hearing ear. When she finished talking Alex asked, “Do you love him? Cause that’s really all the matters. You’ll work out the rest.” And, yes, she realized, she did love him. The next day she phoned him up and asked him to come over. George showed up, nervous.
“Have..have you decided?”
“The answer is yes George. I’ll marry you.”
George broke into a smile, “Okay, good. Now hold on I want to do this right.” He dropped to his knees again and pulled out a ring, “Kadia CooperSmith, will you be my wife?”
“Yes.”

The wedding was planned and held a short time later. Although it was winter Kadia insisted on an outdoor wedding. George just shook his head and went along with it. All the guests showed up and the couple took their vows.

After the wedding, George moved in with Kadia. He soon found out what Kadia already knew, the roof leaked and there was no heat. He almost froze one night and had to spend hours in the hot tub to keep warm. He talked to Kadia about moving.

“But I like it here.”
“Hon, we can’t stay here. We’re going to freeze to death.”
“But, I don’t want to live in some subdivision.”
“We don’t have to. We can build a cabin in the Hills.”
“Fine. I’ll think about it.”
“Kadia-”
“I said I’ll think about it.”

Kadia didn’t want to leave her home, but she knew George had a point. If they stayed, it was going to be a tough winter to get through. Her decision was made for her, though, after a visit to the doctor’s. She had a little one on the way. So they packed up and George started work on their new family cabin.

Round Three - Jalen House

ROUND THREE - JALEN HOUSE
Jalen House - Introduction - http://aspenlake.blogspot.com/2007/12/jalen-family-welcome-to-jalen-family.html
Round One - http://aspenlake.blogspot.com/2007/12/round-one-lairds.html
Round Two - http://aspenlake.blogspot.com/2007/12/round-two-jalen-family.html

Colton Jalen - elder - family
Marion Jalen - elder - family
Xiaden Jalen - college - knowledge
Woalfe Jalen - teen - romance
C.J Jalen - child

Age was beginning to effect everyone in the Jalen household. C.J. grew into a spoiled daddy’s girl and Colton and Marion hit their elder years.

To celebrate their golden anniversary, Colton decided to throw an anniversary party. It was a good time party and they even managed to get Woalfe to dress in a suit and tie, though he warned them to enjoy it because it would be the last time.

Now that they were elders, Colton decided it was time for him and his wife to spend some time alone, and booked a vacation to a deserted island. They left Woalfe at home to babysit C.J. Woalfe immediately decided that no parents at home equalled one thing = party time!! They party went well with dancing and games, and Woalfe grew closer to young Lindsay. Finally he decided it was time for their first kiss - and was rudely interrupted by Orlando! He had forgotten that Orlando had a thing for Lindsay. Of course, Woalfe had no intention of letting that stop him, and as soon as Orlando was gone…

Lindsay seemed to really like him, and sure, Woalfe liked her too, but he was young. He didn’t want to get tied down to one girl yet. As the party went on, he found himself in the upstairs bedroom with Sophie.

The party was in full mode when Woalfe got a phone call every teenager dreads; his parents were home early. They were at the airport and would be home in an hour.

He quickly ushured everyone out and looked I dismay at the garbage piled up around the living room. C.J. came downstairs then. She looked at Woalfe and grinned, “So what you going to big bro?”
“um… clean up?”
“How much time do you have?”
“Well…about a half hour. Say…how’d you like to be a good littler sister and give me a hand?”
C.J. crossed her arms and looked around the room, thinking. She then looked back at her brother. “50 bucks and it’s a deal.”
“20 and I take you to the arcade on Saturday.”
“Deal.”
Together, the two Jalen kids cleaned up the house, and threw the last paper plate in the garbage just as the taxi pulled up. The elders greeted their kids, unaware that anything had ever been wrong.

As time went on, Woalfe continued his relationship with Lindsay. Finally he asked her to go steady with him. No, he didn’t have any intention of not kissing other girls, but he did want to make sure *she* stayed faithful. They shared a kiss and Woalfe was surprised to find that he might actually be in love with her. But there were so many other girls out there, how could he stick with just one?

Meanwhile Marion was beginning to feel her age and knew she didn’t have too much longer in the Sim world. She became obsessed with painting - trying to leave something tangible behind for her children. One morning, she decided to sit down and write her memoirs. She knew that eventually her children would become adults, and then elders themselves, and she didn’t’ want them to forget the years they had spent as a family. Unfortunately, she didn't have a chance to finish it.

The funeral was held the next week. Xaiden came in from college to attend. Woalfe tried to be there for a his little sister, and hid how much he was hurting. He had always been closer to his mother than his father. The funeral was a small affair. Just close family and friends.

Afterwards they sat down and had a family discussion about what to do with the life insurance policy that Marion had left. It was a surprise to everyone when they found out there had even been one. Neither of the boys had too much input. It was just money. It seem like it didn’t really mattered. Woalfe was especially quiet. It was only C.J. that spoke. She had wanted a pool for a long time, and a car when she was older. Since no one had any other input C.J. won out and the money was going to be put towards remodelling their house.

When the family meeting ended, Woalfe went out into the yard and stared up at the clouds. He felt so alone. Xaiden came out and sat down next to him.
“I didn’t realize she had poor health,” Xaiden said.
“Neither did I.:.”
“You okay bro?”
Woalfe shrugged.
“I know you were closer to her than the rest of us.”
Woalfe sat up, “C.J. doesn’t seem to even care.”
“She cares. She’s just young. She’ll be hit the hardest when dad goes.”
“That could be any day too, couldn’t it?”“Don’t think like that.”
“But it’s true.” He lay back down on the grass, “Death hits us all eventually. I just, I expected them to be around to see my grandkids. Now Mom’s already gone.”
“We’ve still got each other Woalfe. The Jalen kids. We’ll be okay if we just stick together.”
“Yeah, I guess we have too. Pretty soon it’ll just be us.”
“So take good care of C.J. while I’m at school. She’s growing up so fast.”
“I will.”
Xiaden grinned then, “Yeah, keep her away from boys like you.”
Woalfe laughed. “Definitely.”

So the house was remodelled. C.J. got what she wanted, - a nice large pool - and the Jalen family began the new phase of their life.

Round One - Laird/Orlando

This is the first update of Orlando being out on his own.

ROUND ONE: The Laird ( Orlando) - House

Orlando stepped out of the taxi and looked up at his new apartment. So this was it. He was finally in the big city. He took a deep breath and went on inside. Okay, he had to admit, the a newspaper ad had made the apartment seem a little nicer than it really was. When it had said furnished, he expected a little more than just a bed. But it was still a place to sleep, and he had dreams - he wasn’t going to be living in a little apartment for long. He was going places. Soon he would build his own house in the exclusive suburb of Bluewater Village. But that took money and he didn’t have to work until the next day so decided to use the day off to see if he could make any extra money around town.

He quickly found a job working as a DJ at the Crypto Night Club. He made good money and was pleased with how his prospects looked in the city. He realized though that his country boy look was just not going to go over well there, not if he wanted to get ahead, which he did. A makeover was in order.

He worked hard and found himself quickly meeting the right people in the business and moving up. Soon he found himself in a recording studio doing a demo. He sang rock music, because that was what people wanted, but what he really loved was classical piano. But you couldn’t have everything, he decided, so he just had to go with it. Although he enjoyed the noise and motion of living downtown he found that as time passed he began to grow lonely. He missed his family and friends from Aspen lake. Sure he could call and talk to them, but it just wasn’t the same. He found himself often thinking of this girl he met while shopping. One afternoon, on a day off, he decided to just go for it and phone and ask her out. She said yes. He wanted to look mature and grown up so he took her to Lucky Shack’s cards and drinks.

The date went okay, but only okay. He did really like Nerrissa. She was smart, book smart, the way he wasn’t. She wanted to learn and had plans for college. He felt embarrassed when he admitted he wasn’t going to college.
“You’re *not* going to college?” Nerrissa said.
“No, I, um, I mean we don’t have the money. My dad’s just a farmer. College is expensive.” “There’s scholarships.”
“I don’t think I’d get any. I’m not that great in school.”
“Then what *are* you going to do?”
“I’m going to be a musician!” He said it proudly, standing up straighter.
“There’s a dozen of those here,” Nerrissa said, “And ones who are going to be actors.” She went back to her card game without saying anything more. Orlando felt defeated. He had wanted to impress her, but obviously he hadn’t. And what if she was right? What if he didn’t make it? No, he wouldn’t think that way. He was going to make it. When the date was over Nerrissa hugged him, but said nothing about going out again. That was why he was surprised when she phoned him on Saturday to ask him out.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The second date went much better and the subject of school didn’t come up. Nerrissa moved fast, and soon they were doing nothing, it seemed, but kissing. Orlando tried to keep up but felt out of place and backwards. He wasn’t used to girls like Nerrissa. Smart, sophisticated; fast. He felt like such a backwards country boy. He found himself completely falling for her though.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Things went smoothly the next few months between him and Nerrissa. They dated often, usually with Nerrissa making the moves and Orlando trying his best to keep up with her.

Orlando felt like he had met the girl he would spend forever with. His career too suddenly went on the upswing. On a sleepy Sunday, after recording a song in the studio he was waiting for lunch in an upscale restraunt and went over to play their piano. He played a classical piano piece and got so lost in the music that he didn’t even notice that everyone had gone quiet as they watched him. When he finished there was a huge applause. Orlando just blushed, embarrassed. He always had had a habit of losing himself in his music. Just as he was about to leave a man approached him.
“You can really play son.”
“Thanks. That was a simple piece though”
“No it wasn’t.” He was serious. Orlando looked at him.
The man was right of course, it *wasn‘t* an easy piece, but only someone who knew classical piano would know that. It turned out that the man booked concerts at a downtown theatre and was interested in booking him. If he did good he could go pretty far with it. Orlando took the man’s business card, not quite believing what was happening. He was going to be a concert pianist, a *real* pianist!

He rushed home immediately to tell Nerrissa the good news.
She was happy for him, but sounded distracted and distant. He tried to tell himself that she was just distracted with college, and there was nothing to worry about. After all, College was hard. No, he was sure there was nothing wrong.

Time passed, and he had been in the city for nearly two years. He had worked his way into being a fairly well known concert pianist, and was making very decent money. He even had made enough to buy a lot in the Bluewater Village estates and was now saving away for the dream of building his own home. He was still with Nerrissa but they rarely saw each other, and when they did she seemed distant. On her vacation home from school one winter, he decided to invite her over for dinner. For the whole meal she was aloof and irritable.
“What’s wrong nessie?” Orlando finally asked her, “Did I do something?”
“No, its not what you did, its what you‘re *not* doing.”
“I don’t understand…”
She put down her fork, “Orlando, you make good money, right?”
“Pretty decent, yeah.”
“You told me when we first me that you weren’t going to school because you couldn’t afford it. Well, you can now. So what’s your excuse?”
The question caught him off guard. He thought the school subject had been long forgotten. But she was clearly annoyed. “Well, I have a job now Ness,“ he tried to explain, “I mean, I can’t just take off. I’m in a contract.”
“Just more excuses.” She stood up and started putting on her jacket. “Where are you going?” Orlando asked.
“I’m going back home, then I’m going back to college, where people actually care about learning.”
“Wait a minute, are you…”
“breaking up with you? Yeah, I think I am. I’m sorry Orlando,I really am, but this just isn’t going to work.”
Orlando watched her for a moment and then grew angry, “You have no right to judge me! I work hard, I lead a decent life - so what if I’m not college educated! It doesn’t mean you’re better then me.” he pointed at the door, “Get out. Just get out.”
She looked at him, her face cold, then walked towards the door. She stopped before leaving and looked back at him, “Just don’t forget,” she said, “I broke up with *you*.” She turned around and left.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

For weeks afteward Orlando didn’t know what to do with himself. He felt alone and lost. So this is was the life he had dreamed of, the life that he had run away to find. He began to realize that maybe it wasn’t all he had thought it was. Maybe he should have just stayed on the farm. Even the concerts, though he enjoyed playing the piano for an audience, were tough because of how controlled he was. He was in contract to do certain songs at certain times and he had no choice in the matter. One cold afternoon he sat on the barren lot that was supposed to become his and Nessie’s home and wondered if he should just quit it all and go back home.

But he had worked hard to get into the position he was in and he wasn’t ready to give it up yet. Maybe, after he was known better they would give him more control over his music. Maybe then he could finally start playing stuff that he wrote. Or maybe that was all just more false dreams. He just didn’t know. That evening he called his father and asked if he could come and visit for the weekend. Brady could sense there was something wrong in his son’s voice and immediately agreed to come.

His father showed up early the next Saturday morning. Orlando was so relieved to see him. He hadn’t seen either him or Declan in almost a year.

They sat and talked and Orlando poured out everything.

Brady listed and then spoke, soft, “Do you realize how many people would want to be in your place? You’re not even 21 Orlando and you’re already playing sold out concerts.”
“I know I should feel lucky Dad, but I just…this wasn’t how I had thought things would be. I thought I’d get known for *my* music, not other people’s”
“Give it time Orlando. You‘ve only been here for two years. And as for Nessie, she didn’t sound like the right one son.”
“I loved her Dad.” He swallowed hard when he said that. It was the first time he had admitted it to anyone.
“yeah, but did she love you?” Brady asked.
Orlando slumped down into the couch, “Obviously not.”
Brady put his arm around his son’s shoulders, “You’re first heart break is always the worst son.” “How long does it take to stop hurting?” Orlando asked.
“Sometimes, a short time, sometimes a while. Its hard to say.”
Orlando looked over at his father, “How long did it take you to forget about Aurora?”
Brady gave his son a sad smile, “Like I said, son, sometimes it can take a while.”
“But it does stop?” Orlando asked.
“yeah, it stops.”
That was what he needed to hear. It gave him strength to stay and keep going for his dreams.
“Okay, Dad. I’ll keep going then.”

Round Two - The Coopersmith's

Introduction - http://aspenlake.blogspot.com/2007/12/introductions-coopersmiths.html
Round one - http://aspenlake.blogspot.com/2007/12/round-one-coopersmiths.html

Adam was surprised at how lonely he was now that Kadia had left. They hadn’t even been that close, but he missed her anyway. His parents didn’t seem to have any time for him. They were always so wrapped up in their careers. Alex was trying to become police chief and Suzie was busy dreaming of buying a home in the new Ridge Subdivision. It didn’t really make sense to Adam. They adopted him, which meant they *wanted* him, and yet, all they did was ignore them. He would come home and struggle most evenings alone at his homework, trying to impress his father with good grades.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

He managed to get an A+ report and was so proud to show his father. Maybe now he would pay attention to him! He ran up to him to show him as soon as he got home from work. Alex congratulated him, but then busied himself making friends with another co-worker. Adam found himself playing alone again in the backyard.

One day a new girl showed up in his class. No one wanted to make the first move at recess so Adam went up and talked to her. He knew what it felt like to be ignored. He found out that she had a home much like his, with parents that were too busy to care. She soon became his best friend, calling most nights and coming over after school. Adam found it helped to have someone around that understood what his life was like.

But still, he desperately wanted his father’s attention, so he started to ask about his job. Adam thought that maybe if he tried to become a police officer too, then his father would be proud of him. Alex was happy that his son was showing an interest in the police work. He had been worried for some time about his son’s lack of ambition. He seemed content to just slide by in life. Alex decided he should start encouraging Adam more in the things that would help with the job in the future. He also let him play with his finger print scanner. Alex thought it would be fitting to carry on the tradition of police work in the family for a third generation.

Soon, Suzie realized her dream of owning a new Ridge Subdivision house. She was promoted to an extra on a local TV show and they invested the promotion money into their new house. Adam felt weird watching the for sale sign go up and their lives get packed away in boxes. First Kaida was gone, and now the only home he had known was gone too.

In their new house, Adam found out that his bedroom was in the basement. He wasn’t even on the same floor as his parents now. It was as if they wanted to just forget that they had a kid at all. The new bedroom scared him. He was too far away from his parents and there were strange noises from the garage. His sleep was restless but he didn’t want to tell his father because he didn’t want him to think he was a wimp.

Shortly after moving into the new house, Kadia graduated from college and moved back home. They only had two bedrooms though so Adam wondered where she would sleep. He was fine with the idea of sharing a room. Maybe it wouldn’t be so scary with someone else there. Kadia, though, wasn’t intending to stay. She was just briefly ‘crashing’ in order to pack up her stuff, and then she was off to her own home, a little place she had rented up in the hills. Adam found her packing one evening and sat down to talk to her. He told her about being scared and lonely. The next day after school he found Kadia gone, but a small kitten waiting for him in his room. There was a note on his bed, left by Kadia.

“Hey Cous! This is Cymmi. My friend George found him on the street and can’t keep him. I thought you could give him a good home. Maybe having some company will help you not feel so scared. Remember, I’m only up in the hills so if you ever want to see me, just ride your bike on up!”

Adam quickly got to know his new little kitten, and he found that having it did help the loneliness and fear.

Adam’s sixteenth birthday rolled around. His Dad threw him a big party. At first Adam was happy, but soon realized that most of the people there he didn’t even know. They were just friends from his parents work. The party wasn’t really about him. It was just an excuse to smooze with their work friends. Him and Trista snuck away on their own to talk.
“This sucks. This party isn’t even about me,” Adam said.
“Yeah, but its fun. And I’ll bet you’ll get a really cool present,” Trista replied
“I don’t care about presents. All they do is buy me stuff.”
“Look, Adam, you can’t change the way things are. It sucks, but so be it. All you can do is enjoy the perks, like all the cool stuff we get and the exotic vacations.” She lounged back on the grass, “Parents are overated anyway. I mean, not having them around gives you the freedom to do what you want.”
“Freedom to do what?”
She shrugged, “To do whatever you want. And Go where you want, when you want. No ones around to stop you, so who cares. I say, enjoy life! We’ve got the best of everything.”
“We just don’t have parents.”
“Like I said, overrated.”
He sighed, trying to see what Trista saw, “Yeah I guess.”
Soon his Mom appeared and found him. “There you are! Come on Adam, we have a surprise for you.”
Trista grinned at him, “Present time. *This* is what makes it worth it”
They went around back to the party. Alex had a wide smile and lead him around to the front, where a brand new sports car sat. “This is yours Adam!” Alex said, proud.
Adam couldn’t believe it. His own car. “Cool!” he quickly went to check it out.
“Take it for a spin,” Alex said, giving him the keys.He quickly jumped in with Trista and drove it around the blok.
“See, the perks!” Trista said with a laugh, turning up the radio. “And tonight, we sneak out.” She grinned. Adam looked over at her, then grinned too. Yes, the perks. He just had to keep remembering the perks.
